“My heart wants roots. My mind wants wings. I cannot bear their bickering’s.” (E.Y. Harburg)
This piece is about the seemingly irreconcilable need to have freedom, whilst also wanting a home (a secure sense of permanency).
The young woman is standing in the corner of the room, next to the window which gives the viewer a sense of the vast world outside, a place for exploration. On the other side, is a wall covered in wallpaper, alluding to the furnished comforts of a home.
The painting does not aim to judge either point of view, but rather, seeks the viewer to ponder their own internal battles and opposing desires.
